Being quite inexperienced at bike electrics, I brought my recently-acquired Brake Flasher Unit (FGBF-1) to be installed on my Ninja. I was informed by the garage that installing it would cause me to fail at MOT, as such devices were not legal on uk roads.

Is this true? I've not seen this mentioned anywhere before.

Fluke

Hi

As with most modulators technically they are not road legal in many country's, including the uk. The flashing only starts after a initial long flash and so not to annoy other road users it will not function if the brake is being / has been used... This avoids it operating in stop go traffic.

Many newer cars from Audi, vw, BMW, Mercedes etc etc, have flashing lights \ indicators when braking hard or activating abs.

I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for using one though...and I wouldn't ride without one after being pushed by a car into the middle of a rush hour roundabout. Before I had the unit I used to pump brakes at junctions to same effect. The bike also used to MOT fine, so I think it's really down to the testers discretion.
